Large Luxury SUV Sales In Canada June 2014 YTD

2015 Cadillac Escalade black
GM Canada is prepping the launch of the new 2015 Cadillac Escalade in Toronto, Ontario, as we speak. Or type, or converse, or open up a dialogue, or whatever it is we do. Thats not Toronto in the above image.

Cadillac hasnt sold more than 50 regular-wheelbase Escalades since April of last year, not more than 60 since March 2012, and not more than 70 since November 2011.

There havent been more than 20 long-wheelbase Escalade ESVs sold in a single month since August 2012, not more than 30 since April 2010. Presumably, this new Escalade will sell more frequently.

In the meantime, Mercedes-Benz has ratcheted up sales of the GL-Class. GL volume jumped 20% in 2011, 7% in 2012, and 30% in 2013. The GL fell 11% through the first five months of 2014, but sales shot up 73% in June.

Land Rover Range Rover sales, meanwhile, quintupled in June. The Range Rover outsold the Infiniti QX80, Lincoln Navigator, and the Escalade family combined last month.

Sampras, Nadal, Federer, Laver? Its debatable, though few would argue that the best tennis player of all time is one of those four guys.

Jordan, Russell, Magic, Kareem, Wilt? Im certain its Michael, but I acknowledge theres room for an argument.

But there is no denying that one full-size luxury car stands head and shoulders above its colleagues in terms of market place success. That car, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, sold more often in Canada in 2014 than its next two best-selling rivals combined.

2014 was the best Canadian sales year for the S-Class (and its CL-Class coupe offshoot which is once again the S-Class) since 2008. Year-over-year volume jumped 134%.

GCBC isnt here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts. Sales data for brands such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Rolls-Royce etc. are unfortunately not made available in Canada. Tesla doesnt release a monthly Model S sales report, either. ANDC estimates for Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce were 158, 209, 112, and 81, respectively, in 2014. Tesla sold 724 cars in the first 11 months of 2014. Total Maserati volume is reported, but not by specific models. GCBC shows the Cadillac XTS, Hyundai Equus, and Kia K900 with midsize luxury cars not because of their size, but because the price points are much more directly comparable.

Decembers increase translated to only 277 extra sales across the segment. Compared with 2013, sales of these cars over the course of the 2014 calendar year tumbled by 4010 units. They formed only 2.6% of all passenger car sales in Canada in 2014, down from 3.1% in 2013.

The top-selling car in the loosely-defined segment is the Chrysler 300, though 300 volume plunged 23%, the second-worst drop in the category. Together, the 300 and its Dodge Charger fraternal twin, the second-ranked car, accounted for 39% of all large, volume brand sedan sales in Canada in 2014.

Only one car in the class, the Buick LaCrosse, posted an improvement. And that improvement pushed the LaCrosse to just 1557 sales, making 2014 the second-worst full sales year for the Allure/LaCrosse line of sedans in their history.

* Genesis refers only to the sedan, not the coupe. For Canadian purposes - Hyundai USA doesnt yet breakdown sales figures for the sedan and much less costly coupe - the Genesis will now be shown with both these volume brands, with which Hyundai is a direct competitor, and midsize luxury cars, with which the Genesis competes.
